Lafayette or "Stokes" Oliver was born in the Indian Territories of what is now Missouri. He travelled to California in the 1850's, married, had three children, the last that died in infancy. Following his wife, Sarah's, death, he moved his family back east, eventually settling in Dallas, Texas.
