US Congressman. He joined the New York State Militia in 1805 and was brigade inspector in Saratoga County, New York. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1811 and practiced law in Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties. During the War of 1812, he served as a Major in the United States Army. After the war, he was judge of the supreme court of Chautauqua County, brigade inspector of Chautauqua County, in 1817 and district attorney of Chautauqua County. In 1825, he was elected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses, serving until 1829. After his term, he moved to Michigan and was appointed Postmaster and Government superintendent of public works near Detroit in 1831.During the Black Hawk War in 1832, he served as an aide to General Winfield Scott. In 1841, he was appointed by President William Henry Harrison, receiver of public moneys at the land office in Dixon, Illinois, serving until 1843. He died while traveling back from a visit to his daughter's home at age 71.
