Allen, 87, died at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Elmhaven East.

Allen had a long family history in Parsons.

He was born July 28, 1923, at Thayer to Henry and Mary Belle (Stamps) Allen. His family moved to Parsons the next year.

On Feb. 2, 1947, he married Mildred M. Finch in Parsons. Mrs. Allen preceded him in death on Sept. 17, 1994.

Mr. Allen was a member of Parsons Foursquare Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers and two sisters.

The service for Mr. Allen will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Parsons Foursquare Church and may be left at or sent to the funeral home at P.O. Box 942, Parsons, 67357.

Allen's business had changed along with Parsons. In his early adult years, he sold Army surplus items. He later opened the Campus Shop at 1901 Broadway, where he stayed for 12 years, and then moved to the Main Street location, which later became Parsons Plaza after urban renewal changed downtown Parsons.

The Campus Shop endured the urban renewal process and in 1970 was the first retail business to undergo a major renovation in the urban renewal district. Allen opened a rear entrance to a parking lot on Broadway as part of this project. Improvements at the store were to include central heating and air conditioning, lowering of ceilings and the installation of new fluorescent lighting. Windows in the rear of the building were closed, and the entire back of the store building were covered with white stucco. A 42-inch glass and aluminum door was installed at the rear with an enclosed entrance way to give access to the store, according to the Sun's archives.

Even in retirement, Russell Allen didn't stop working.

Allen owned and operated the Campus Shop, a clothing store and tuxedo rental store, in downtown Parsons for years and announced his retirement and the store's closing in June 1988. He'd been in business for about 42 years at that point.

But he kept busy after the downtown store closed at 1720 Parsons Plaza, back when the downtown was a pedestrian mall, and continued to operate the tuxedo and formal attire rental business out his home 2404 Main for a number of years. He later celebrated 50 years in business.

Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.
