Ret. USAF Major Dennis Anthony "Tony" Bickett Jr., 57, of Freeburg, Ill., born Aug. 4, 1953, in Owensboro passed away Monday morning, Feb. 21, 2011, in the comfort of his own home after a long, hard battle with cancer, surrounded by family who loved him very much. Major Bickett retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1994, after 23 years of service. He was currently vice president of operations at NCI Information Systems in Fairview Heights, Ill. Tony was an avid golfer who loved to travel with his buddies to as many different courses as possible. He also enjoyed hunting, hosting Sunday afternoon barbecue get-togethers, and spending time with his family, of whom he was extremely proud. Tony got lucky 25 years ago when he went into remission the first time he was diagnosed with cancer. He got to see his sons grow into fine young men and start families of their own. He was able to enjoy his grandchildren for 14 years. Tony fought hard, but it just wasn't meant to be.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis A. Sr. and Kathleen, nee Rummage, Bickett; and a brother, Patrick A. Bickett. Surviving are his wife, Kimberly E., nee Surmeier, Bickett, whom he married Nov. 16, 1999; three sons, Clinton David (Maureen) Bickett of Clarksburg, Md., Brice Anthony (Carey) Bickett of Coatesville, Penn., and Wyatt Alan (Beth) Bickett of Chicago; five stepchildren, Erica (Brad) Haas of Mascoutah, Ill., Brandon (Malissa) Weber of Freeburg, Derek Weber of Freeburg, Jacob Muenchau of Charleston, S.C., and Kyle Menchau of Freeburg; 10 grandchildren, Alexis and Brett Bickett, Leioni and Hatcher Bickett, Mikayla Weber, Reagan and Braden Haas, and Awstin and Caleb Weber; a brother, Ricky Bickett of Calhoun; and three sisters, Shirley Jean (Mike) Warren of Byhalia, Miss., Sarah Diane Bickett of Owensboro and Barbara Gail (Brett) Knight of Dallas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorial & Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Freeburg, with Father Mark Reyling officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, and after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial with full military honors will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis. Arrangements by George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg.
