Betty was the daughter of Walter and Blanche Caum. She had four brothers and was the only girl in the family. She
graduated from Altoona High School, Class of 1938.
She married E. Merle Glunt (Merle) on August 17, 1939 in Frostburg, MD. They were partners in life for 56 years. They had two children, Janice Marie (Glunt) Ray and Donald M. Glunt. She and Merle were members of the Northminster First Presbyterian Church as were her daughter and son.
During the beginning of World War II, mom worked as a typist for the US government, as my dad worked at FCC. Mom was also an air raid warden when they lived in an apartment in southeast Washington, D.C. She was very proud of that position and as I was told much later, she had a no nonsense attitude during the emergency blackouts that world war brings. She would have been a great beat cop. After the war, mom settled down at the family home and raised her children in a good Christian home.
There are nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Betty was the family genealogist and was a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution. She was instrumental in the acceptance of both my dad and I as compatriots in the Sons of the American Revolution. She traced our family back to Germany and the Netherlands from the 1600's. She lost her valiant battle with breast cancer after the benign tumor was accidentally removed and the malignant one was left within to metastisize and spread throughout her body. She was called home to the lord as he needed her more than we. She no longer suffers as she is in God's safe and guiding hands. God stands by the righteous, obedient and faithful. She was the most wonderful mother of all.
My mom loved absolutely everybody that came into her life. In my whole existence, I never once heard mom bad mouth, put down or insult another human being. I never heard one harsh word between her and dad. Never once did I ever hear her use a cuss word or gossip. A large part of my dad died on March 9, 1995. He was never quite the same after her death. He refused to move in with me or my sister as he would never leave mom no matter what. He flowered her grave each week, snow, rain, wind or shine. Dad did not care much for the rules of plastic flowers only at mom's gravesite. He braved a 60 mile round trip to be with his high school sweetheart and love of his life. He and mom knew the secrets of success and happiness and practiced them daily. My parents were deeply in love with each other and loved their children beyond all measure. My sister and I could not have asked for a better home.
Mom, thank you for teaching me how to be compassionate and caring. It is my essence and the cornerstone of my being. It was instrumental in the profession I have endeared for three decades now. Thank you for being my mom. I love you with all my heart and miss you dearly.
