The 43rd Infantry Regiment, organized at Big Shanty, Georgia, in April, 1862, contained men from Cherokee, Pickens, Cobb, Hall, Forsyth, Jefferson, and Jackson counties. Battles: Cumberland Gap, Chickasaw Bayou, Vicksburg, Champion Hill, Chattanooga, Atlanta Campaign, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Ezra Church, Jonesboro, Franklin, Nashville, Carolinas, Bentonville. They surrendered 26 Apr 1865.

The Battle of Jonesboro was fought August 31, and September 1, 1864. It was the final battle of the Atlanta Campaign, and was the ultimate reason that the city of Atlanta fell into Union hands. Sherman occupied Atlanta 3 Sep 1864.
