O'Dowd served in the Civil War as Colonel, 181st Ohio Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, USV, March 13, 1865 for gallant conduct in the defense of Murfreesboro, Tenn., at the attack of General Hood's forces during the siege of Nashville, and for highly meritorious services during the war.
