She was born Dec. 24, 1926, in Paducah, Ky., to Lillian (Beyer) and L.D. "John" Vannerson.
She grew up in McCracken County and was salutatorian of her graduating class of 1944 Heath High School.
She attended Murray State University and earned a B.A. in Business Administration in 1947. She was a founding member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority and a member of several clubs, many of which she held an office. Elenora received her degree in only three years.
After graduation from college, Mrs. McCain taught school at Moweaqua Community High School, Moweaqua, Ill., before being called back to Kentucky to be a deputy sheriff.
