Abby Manly Gwathmey was the third president of the Woman's Missionary Union and served from 1894 to 1895. She was the daughter of Dr. Basil Manly. Her husband was Dr. William H. Gwathmey, a physician. She was a relatively young widow when at age forty-seven, she was left with the support of nine children; she had little money. She came from a resourceful and prominent family--the Manlys: her father was a founder of the SBC and a prominent minister, and her brothers were college presidents. Her husband's crowning achievement was that of unpaid recording secretary of the Foreign Mission Board, a post he held for thirty-three years.
Perhaps because of Gwathmey's long involvement with the FMB, his widow found employment as a bookkeeper for the Foreign Mission Journal.
