Lucas was a private in the Revolutionary War, in Capt. Nathaniel Carpenter's Co., Col. John Hathaway's Regiment. Service from April 21, 1777, 23 days. The company was stationed at Tiverton, RI.

He was a farmer, and inherited the homestead of his father and grandfather in Rehoboth.

Lucas was the husband of Elizabeth Short and the son of Andrew Wheaton and Lydia Carpenter Wheaton. His siblings were: Andrew, Lydia, Robert and Susannah. Lucas married Elizabeth in December 1785 in Rehoboth.

Common ancestor of Sue Williams (through son Job) and of Kevin Avery (through son James).

Children: Lydia, Job, Lucas Wheaton Jr, James, Betsy, Wilbur and Sarah Short Wheaton Read (wife of Cyril Read).
