William was the oldest child of James and Lydia (Brook) Burgess.

William and Sallie Spurr Cobb Burgess had three children,George W., Lydia Ellen who married a Babb and my grandmother Mary Susan. Mary Susan was born June 18, 1854 and died October 25, 1894 in Casco, Maine. Mary Susan married Freeman Berry who died 7 Jan. 1887. She had two children that survived infancy, my father Ralph Hartford Berry born 1885 and Chester born 1887. Mary Susan was a very troubled woman and she died 24 Oct. 1894 and was buried in what was called at the time Pike's Corner Cemetery, now Green Grove, in an unmarked grave, as the Burgess family was very angry with her. Her death record is on file with the state of Maine The two boys were raised by the grandparents, Chester going to the Burgess family and my father going to the Berrys.
