Mrs. Amanda A. Miller of Unionville, one of Appanoose Counties oldest residents and well beloved woman died Tuesday afternoon Nov 7th 1944 about 3:15 at the home of her son Frank A. Miller in Centerville. She suffered a stroke Sunday, Sept 17th shortly after she had returned to her home in Unionville from church and was brought to the hospital in Centerville where she remained until taken to the home of her son. She had recovered so she could walk about some but complications developed which resulted in her death. All the members of her family were about the bedside when she passed away.
Mrs. Miller was the daughter of one of Appanoose Counties well known pioneer families, her parents being Claudius Buchanan and Martha Jane Baldridge Miller who came from Tennessee and were the owners of the land on which Unionville was laid out.
She married John Everett Miller, 6 Nov. 1879 in Unionville. A member of another of the same name but unrelated which had come from Tennessee also but from a different part of the state, and settled in the neighborhood where the Miller Church is located.
They lived in Unionville until 1885 when they went to southwest Nebraska and homesteaded a farm. Her husband was elected County Clerk in Perkins County and served two years. Drought became severe in the southwest Nebraska region and they returned to Unionville after 11 years and Unionville remained their home.
After her husband died in 1931, she continued to occupy the home, being of such a resourcful nature that she lived alone. Her daughter Gladys Underwood lived close by but recently the Underwood's had gone to Sidney, Nebraska. Mrs Miller had been in their home and was there when she suffered her stroke and was found by neighbors soon after.
The following children survive: Gladys S. Miller, Mrs. H. M. Underwood of Sidney, Ne., Frank A. Miller of Centerville, Eunice May Miller, Mrs. Samuel O. Carr of McFarland, Kansas, Laura C. Miller, Mrs. P. Edward Rouch of Eldon, Mo. and a brother William C. Miller near Unionville Iowa survive.
Three brothers Benjamin, James D. & John E. Miller and three sisters, Laura J. wife of John Hicks, Sarah E. Wife of George Stutovoss and Rosa B. Miller wife of Cornelius W. Large of Colorado are deceased.
Amanda Miller was born 19th of April 1858 in Appanoose County making her 86 years old. She has 8 grandchildren and 6 Great-grandchildren
Mrs Miller in her girlhood days was a school teacher in Appanoose County for several years. She became a member of the Miller Church in her youth and was very active in it all her life. She took great pleasure in its associations and service. She had a great number of friends who admired her fine qualities as a mother, church worker, and as one who took her place in home and community responsibilities.
Funeral services will be held at the Miller Unionville Methodist Church at 2:30 Thursday afternoon and burial
will be in the Unionville Cemetery.
