James “Bill” Barnes, 55, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. He was born Feb. 26, 1946, in Lee County. He was a truck driver for Com Trak, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of East Heights Baptist Church, where he was active in the men’s ministry. He enjoyed fishing, auto racing and the outdoors. He was also known as “Smokestack.”

Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Terry Ledbetter officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Barbara Barnes of Tupelo; four children, Kerry Barnes and his wife, Melinda, of Saltillo, Kevin Barnes and his wife, Amy, of Tupelo, Lesa Bishop and her husband, Perry, of Saltillo, and Tonja Steele and her husband, Ken, of Baldwyn; two sisters, Mary Herod and her husband, Wayne, of Tupelo, and Martha Allred and her husband, James, of Tupelo; five grandchildren, Nikole Steele, Levi Bishop, Christopher Barnes, Hannah Barnes and Emily Barnes; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Barnes and Sara Snipes.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Palmer, Lawrence Stanley, Quitman Harris, Terry Steele, Billy Smith and Wayne Monaghan.

The men’s Sunday School class will be honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time today at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the youth department at East Heights Baptist Church in Tupelo.
