Joseph married Mary Reed April 18, 1863, while he was serving with Co. C 45th Va Inf. CSA. His parents are listed on the marriage license as Joseph & Lucinda Hash. He was later captured at the Battle of Piedmont, VA. in 1864 and became a Prisoner of War, held at Camp Morton, Indiana for almost a year. After his release in 1865, he went back to Grayson Co. VA. where he married Elizabeth Moxley in 1866. It is likely that Mary and her parents had the marriage dissolved (maybe thought he was dead), and Joseph apparently did not go hunting for her after his release.
