George Robert Hocking

George Robert Hocking, 82, of Ephrata died at the Ephrata Community Hospital Friday, Mar. 17, 2006 after a short illness.

He was born in Philadelphia to the late John W. Hocking Sr. and the late Reba (Effinger) Hocking Marshall. He was the husband of Doris E. (Nies) Hocking for over 39 years. Mr. Hocking was a WWII Veteran, serving with the Blue Devils Division of the U.S. Army in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. He was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars and an Oak Leaf Cluster.

Robert was a graduate of Avon Grove High School as was associated with his brother, John, as a printer at Hocking Printing Co. since its inception in 1961, until his retirement in 1985. He was instrumental in helping John with the founding of the Shopping News in Ephrata in 1965. Robert was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Lincoln. He was also a member of Cloister Post 429 American Legion, Cocalico Post 3376 VFW, both of Ephrata, and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Assn.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three stepchildren: Susan D. Lerch of Richland, John R., husband of Connie (Buchannan) Lerch, and David C., husband of Debra (Sweigart) Lerch, both of Ephrata; three stepgrandsons; and a brother, John W. Hocking of Lancaster.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 10 a.m. at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata with Rev. Robert M. Bistline officiating. Friends may call at Gravenor's Monday, Mar. 20 from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday for one hour prior to the service. Military Honors will be accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard and interment will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
