BERTIE G. HILLIARD
MANCHESTER CENTER - Bertie Gilbert Hilliard, 65, rural mail carrier here for 41 years, died early Sunday at his home in Manchester Depot following three years of ill health. He was born in Peru Dec 23, 1892, son of Alan and Fannie Barton Hilliard. He had lived in Manchester since 1917.
Mr. Hilliard was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church here, a member and past master of Adoniram Lodge, F. and A.M., a 33rd degree Mason, and a member of the order of Eastern Star, Hope Lodge of Odd Fellows, the Rebekahs and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He had just begun his 42nd year as rural carrier.
Surviving are his wife; the former Martha Hulett; two daughters, Mrs. Harry Torrey and Mrs. Sylvester Hawkins of Manchester Depot; nieces and nephews including two who were brought up by the Hilliards, Kenneth Hilliard of Manchester Depot and Mrs. Lois Hill of Sunderland; three grandchildren; two brothers, Harold of North Bennington and Barton of Manchester Depot; and Mrs. Louise Desmond of Upton, Mass.
The funeral will be tomorrow at 2:30 pm in the First Baptist Church in Manchester Center, the Rev. Edgar Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Friends may call today at the Hilliard home.
