John H. was a Captain in the Civil War. He married Louise Glitzman Dec. 28th, 1871. He had two sons; William Wildon Castor, Charles Arnold Castor, and one daughter; Nellie Ora Castor. He lived with his family at 403 South Forge St., Akron, Ohio and worked as a laborer at the Arron Water Works.

On 27 April 1861 at the age of 25 John enlisted in the 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company G with the rank of Corporal. His enlistment term was 90 days. He mustered out 18 August 1861 at Columbus, Ohio.

The 16th was actually formed twice. In April of 1861 for just 90 days because the government was sure that the rebellion would only last about 3 months, so the 16th dissolved in August of 1861. Because the war continued the 16th formed again in September of 1861. John did not reenlist at that time like many others.
