He was the 2nd son of Rev. Jacob Albert Hill and Elizabeth Hill. The family moved to Jasper Alabama in 1860 and his Father was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives and was pro-secessionist.
John Paul and his brother, Andrew M. Hill enlisted in the 16th Alabama Infantry on July 18, 1861 at Courtland, Alabama. John was killed in action at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee while assaulting the second line of Union breastworks. His borther, Andrew finished the war as Captain of Co. B.
