Ralph Newman

FLORENCE — A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. March 1 at Willamette National Cemetery for Ralph E. Newman Jr. of Florence, who died Dec. 12 of congestive heart failure. He was 82.

Newman was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Eugene to Ralph and Wanda Roach Newman. He married Wilma Chambers in Eugene. They later divorced. He married Carol Hoe­ye in 1962 in Eugene. She died in October 2007 [sic].

He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and received two purple Hearts. He worked at Newman's Fish Market through high school and after his military service before going into custom home building in Eugene and Florence.

Survivors include his stepmother, Zelma Newman of Eugene; four sons, Shawn of Harrisburg, Kim of Sutherlin, Aaron of Junction City and Chad of Springfield; a sister, Edwena Newman Matychuck of Yachats; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements by Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene. Remembrances to the Lions Sight and Hearing Center in Portland and Signature Hospice in Eugene.

Ralph Newman Jr. (1928-2011)

Ralph E. Newman, Jr. passed away on February 12, 2011 at the age of 82. He was born in Eugene, OR, February 28, 1928 to Ralph E. Newman Sr. and Wanda Roach Newman. He was the grandson of John Newman, who founded Newman's Fish Market in the late 1890s.

He worked at the fish market each day after high school with his father and uncles. After graduating from Eugene High School, he joined the United States Marine Corp. Reserves of Eugene and also started school at the University of Oregon, in the school of Architecture. He also sang in the Eugene Glee Club and the Eugene Cascade Chorus.

In 1950, he married Wilma Chambers and they had four sons. As a member of the Marine Corps. Reserve, he was called into action early in the Korean War. An injury suffered in action in December 1950, resulted in the amputation of his right leg above the knee and seven months in a Naval Hospital. He was made a member of the "Chosen Few." He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps. in July 1951.

Ralph designed and built custom homes in the Eugene and Florence areas for many years.

He married Carol Hoeye in 1962 and moved to Florence, OR. Carol and he loved summers in Portland where their boat was moored on the Columbia River, and they were able to spend time with her sister. When Carol retired from teaching they spent their winters in Yuma, AZ. Carol preceded him in death.

Ralph is survived by his sister: Edwena Matychuck; four sons: Shawn of Harrisburg, Kim of Sutherlin, Aaron of Junction City, and Chad of Springfield; three grandsons, and three granddaughters, along with one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral arrangements by Musgrove Family Mortuary. A full Military Honors ceremony will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR on March 1, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.
