During the War Between the States, David enlisted in the Confederate States Army with his brother, Ulysses Byrd Moss on 1 June 1862 in Chattanooga, Tennessee and was mustered as a private in Company E, 2nd (Dukes) Kentucky Cavalry. He was killed 20 August 1862 in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee.
