Claude was the son of Henry Gutmann and Mary Sweeney. On 28 Apr 1918 he married Thelma Moore. The couple did not have any children. At the time of his death he was a hardwood floor finisher for Frank Hartman & Sons. Claude died at the age of 29 of accidental drowning while swimming off Towhead Island in the Ohio River. According to friends, he dropped from a swing attached to a tree into the river into what he thought was shallow water.
