Former longtime Alaska resident JERRY HARVEY CULP , 81, died Feb. 4, 2003, at Cox North Hospital in Springfield, Mo.

''He went to be with the Lord after a long illness,'' his family wrote.

Services were Saturday at Klinger Mortuary chapel in Springfield. Burial with military honors followed at Greenlawn Cemetery in Springfield.

Mr. Culp was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Arnett, Okla., to Liza Belle and Herman Culp . He was raised in Springfield and attended Reed and Strafford high schools.

He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1941 and served during World War II in the South Pacific arena, achieving the rank of technical sergeant. He was wounded on Iwo Jima, for which he received the Purple Heart and was a disabled veteran. He served until 1947, receiving his honorable discharge.

Mr. Culp returned to Springfield, attended Draghuns Business College and was hired by the Civil Aeronautics Administration. He received training in Oklahoma City and was assigned as an air traffic controller at Nenana in March 1951. He was accompanied by his wife, Norma Maxine, and son, Wayne Wilson.

Mr. Culp was employed by the CAA and later the Federal Aviation Administration for 11 years at Nenana. He then worked as a journeyman carpenter, retiring from the union in Fairbanks. ''His finish work in the Fairbanks area is fondly remembered by businesses and property owners where he plied his substantial woodworking skills.''

The Fairbanks Carpenter Union honored him by continuing his work card until his death.

He retired and returned to Springfield with Norma in 1986.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3404 in Springfield. He and Norma were active in the Loyal Order of Moose for many years. He was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Nenana.

Mr. Culp is survived by his wife of 55 years, Norma; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Barbara of Anchorage; sister, Agnes of Willard, Mo.; grandchildren, Tony and Karrie of Modesto, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Kristopher, Brianna and Dylan; and many nephews and nieces.
