Frank was the son of Mary and Joseph Gray. He enlisted in the "Dallas Rifles", Co. C. 6th Arkansas Infantry on July 3, 1861 at Little Rock, Arkansas for "the war". He enlisted along with his brother, George Gray and his uncle, John L. Russell. John was also killed at Franklin and he and Frank were first buried in the same grave on the battlefield. They were later laid to rest side by side in the McGavock Confederate Cemetery in 1866. Both were killed immediately in front of the enemy's breastworks by the same volley.
