John was the youngest child of Timothy and Mary (Hodges) Roark. His father died soon after he was born, and his mother became a seamstress to raise him and his three older sisters.

He married Martha Jane Summers 17 July 1863 in Scott County, Illinois. They had four children of their own: Elizabeth, who never married; Bertha, who died at birth; Joseph Timothy, husband of Margaret G. Coultas; and Mary, wife of A.E. Marshall.

John was a member of Co. I, 10th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Back home, he was a watchmaker and jeweler and owned a shop on the square in Winchester.
