ARNOLD
The many friends of Col. Brent Arnold, of Cincinnati, were greatly grieved at his death January 20 in his apartment house. Last year Col. Arnold suffered a severe attack of pneumonia and was never in his usual health afterward. He spent four months in Florida and then returned to his apartment, but was never able to go to his office regularly, though he directed his business by telephone from his home. He was 81 years old and a man of remarkable mental alertness and business ability to the end of his long and useful life. His death came unexpectedly and his colored housekeeper, Mozella Terry, was the only one present when he died. His son, Mr. Brent Arnold, Jr., was in Louisville where he holds a high position with the Big Four. He left immediately for Cincinnati.
Mr. Arnold was the son of James Madison Arnold and Lucy Thompson Arnold. He was five years old when his father died, and his mother returned to Harrodsburg, living for a while with her brother, David Thompson, Sr. Afterward she bought the home on College street, now owned by the Misses Stephenson. She had several children. Mr. Arnold received much of his education in the schools here, and when the Civil War started he ran away from school to enlist. He was too young and was returned to Harrodsburg, but all his life he regretted that he did not have the opportunity to fight for the Southern cause. Mr. Arnold has been the guest here several times recently of his friends, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cleveland Wood. He was a favorite with all who knew him, being courtly, kindly and interested in people and things about him. Mr. Arnold was for many years general freight agent and superintendent of the Louisville and Nashville railroad with headquarters at Cincinnati. He was a member of several prominent Cincinnati social and business clubs, and an ex-president of the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Mills Jones, a member of the prominent Taylor family noted in the upbuilding of Newport. She died many years ago. His funeral was in Cincinnati and the burial at Newport beside her. One son, Brent Arnold, Jr., of Louisville, survives, and also several nieces and nephews.
