OBIT - Martha Jane Berkley, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Jacke) Berkley, was born near Westfield Ill. March 10, 1840, and died April 29, 1919, aged 79 years 1 month and 19 days.
In 1857, she was united in marriage with J.W. Parcel, a union which extended through a period of over 61 years and was terminated by the death of Mr. Parcel 7 months ago.
To them were born 10 children, only 4 of whom are living: U.S. Parcel of Casey, Ill, J.A. Parcel of Yale, Ill, Mrs. Lizzie Laws and Mrs. Mary Hancock of Westfield. But one member of her father's family, Mrs. Mary A. Fogler of Westfield survives her. In addition to those near relatives, she leaves 12 grandchildren.
Mrs. Parcel entered into the Christian life at the age of 18 years, and joined the United Brethren Church at Westfield and, for over 60 years, has sustained the relation of an ardent worshiper, a steadfast, punctual attendant on all the services of the Church, and a liberal supporter of all its interests, Mrs. Parcel possessed in rarest measure what the Apostle Peter calls, "The ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is, in the sight of God, precious."
Death has no power to dim the sacred glow of such a life and to intrude a shadow of doubt into the everlasting (can't read this section) message to the living is to steadfastly cherish its memory and devoutly emulate its virtues.
