Married in Fincastle, August 24, 1819. Son of Samuel and Ann (Irvine) McDowell; grandson of Samuel and Mary (McClung) McDowell; great-grandson of John and Magdalen (Woods) McDowell. William Adair McDowell attended Washington College (now Washington and Lee), and received the M. D. degree from Philadelphia Medical College. He began the practice of medicine with his distinguished brother [sic - this may should be uncle], Dr. Ephraim McDowell, under whom he had studied before attending college in Philadelphia. After his marriage he practiced medicine for a number of years, and in 1837 he settled in Louisville, Ky. He served as a soldier in the War of 1812.
