Rubye Dowell was born March 27, 1912 (sic - was born in 1911) in Beaconsfield, IA to C. Milton and S. Charlotte (Daily) Bradshaw. She earned a teaching degree from UNI and began her teaching career in Clearfield, Iowa. In 1942 she married Pherrin Dowell then taught in Washinton, D.C. while Pherrin served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Rubye and Pherrin settled in Des Moines where Rubye completed her final 25 years of teaching at Hills and Woodlawn Elementary Schools. During this time she also earned a graduate degree in counseling from Drake University.
Rubye loved children and animals. She cherished her former students and enjoyed the many phone calls, letters and visits from them. Cats and dogs were always in her home. She was known for giving loving care to all animals, especially those abandoned or injured.
Rubye's husband, parents, and sister, Mabel Clymer, have all passed away. She joined them on August 18, 2005. Left to celebrate her memory are nephews, nieces, cousins, wonderful friends and five special kitties.
