POW Civil War CSA: GW Mullis was captured and first held in prison, at Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. Louisville Civil War Prisons: Military Prison located North of Broadway, between 10th and 11th, Union Army Prison First Location was at Liberty Street and 5th Street.
After escaping, he was caught and sent to Camp Douglas, a Confederate POW camp, located on the south-side of Chicago, IL, described as a place of brutal misery that was dubed "80 Acres of Hell." During imprisonment, his skill as a distiller was used to make medicine for the wounded soldiers. He escaped under horrid frozen conditions and made it home well after the war ended in April.
