His father, Thomas Dixon, who was born in England in 1781 and who died in 1824 in Boston, Massachussetts, was a Knight of the Order of the Netherland's Lion and of the Order of the Lily in France.

During the first French revolution and empire the father was once condemned to the guillotine and thrice imprisoned. In 1816 the father visited the United States where he remained two years and on 30 May 1818 married, in Boston, Massachussetts, Mary Bethia, daughter of Benjamin Perrott Homer, of No 37 Beacon street, Boston, and they returned to Holland where they had three sons, one of whom died.
