Death of Mrs. Frank Newlands, Daughter of Senator Sharon
"A sad episode in the history of a remarkably happy domestic group or family circle transpired very early yesterday morning. Mrs. Clara Newlands, wife of Frank Newlands, the lawyer, a gentleman well known and much esteemed in San Francisco, died in childbirth at the age of 29 years. The dread messenger from the mysterious region which all go, and from whence none have been permitted to return, that unrelenting and unavoidable shadow glided into one of the happiest family groups, and with a ruthless hand plucked the brightest flower of them all. A daughter, sister, wife and mother, all in one, taken away just when life was brightest. Mrs. Clara Newlands was a daughter of ex-senator William Sharon. At one time she was the "belle" of San Francisco society. Her beauty and her amiability won for her the love and respect of all who had the pleasure of association. She reigned as a queen, more on account of her nobleness of heart and her sweetness of disposition, than for all her many attributes combined. She was an ideal American woman, and as such became a model wife. Shortly after her marriage nearly seven years ago she retired from fashionable society life, in which she was a recognized and beloved leader and devoted herself to her little circle. Her home was her heaven, her husband her idol and her children her little angels. Her whole life seemed to be devoted to making home happy, and in this effort she appears to have been eminently successful. Life in the Pallace {sic} Hotel appeared to be uncongenial to the domestic tastes of Mrs. Newlands. She wanted a home for herself, her husband, and her children, and about 2 years ago Mr. Newlands purchased the old Latham residence, No. 622 Folsom Street, and it became the home of one of the happiest of families. It was there where death cast its chill , blighting shadow, yesterday morning. It's presence had been announced. The pure, resigned soul of the stricken wife and mother had been warned that the time for farewell had nearly arrived. Mrs. Newlands, who had been sorely afflicted in previous confinements, notified some of her family friends that she felt apprehensive. She said she feared that she should be unable to undergo the ordeal. At her request her father, brothers and sister were summoned. At half-past 9 o'clock Thursday morning Mrs. Newlands appeared to realize her dangerous condition and at her special request Father Pius of St. Dominick's Church, a half brother of her mother, was sent for. In the mean time doctors Hubbard, MacIntosh and Newlands were in attendance and exhausted all means that surgical science could suggest in the effort to save life. All was in vain. Continued hemorrhage so weakened the patient that when death called she closed her eyes and passed peacefully and painlessly away. It was a most sad and memorable scene. It was just past midnight anf a new day was yet unborn when this gentle spirit took its flight. The husband bowed and stricken, the father subdued and sorrowing, three little motherless girls, wondering and sad, and a group of awed and grief impressed friends."
