It was a matter of considerable surprise when the announcement was made on the streets of Cherokee Monday morning, May 27, that another highly esteemed citizen, in the person of E. W. Nelson, had during the night, fallen asleep to awake no more in this life. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson had spent the latter part of Sunday at the home, of their son, W. I. Nelson, in celebration of the latter's birthday. After returning home in the evening Mr. Nelson was restless and soon began to experience a considerable pain in the region of his stomach. This grew more intense and Mr. Nelson seemed to understand that the end was nigh, a change he was all too happy to welcome. During the day, Sunday, he had made some biographical notations of his life and after calling Mrs. Nelson's attention filed them away in his bible, so as to be accessible for anyone who might be called upon to write his obituary. He undoubtedly had premonitions of the approaching end. which came, peacefully at 12:55 a. m., Mondav morning, May 27, 1929.

Emmerson Wesley Nelson was born at Florida, Berkshire countv, Massachusetts. Feb. 3, 1842. Thus he had reached the grand old age of 87 years, 3 months and 24 days. Mr. Nelson's parents. David Nelson and Mary E. Kemp-Nelson, at their death had reached the ripe old age of 79, and Mr. Nelson had a surviving brother. L. D. Nelson, 93 years of age and living at Des Moines at present. So this family of Nelsons are noted for their longevity.

Emmerson Nelson was married first to Lavenia I. Olney on Dec. 3. 1868, at Marion, Iowa. To this union five children were born, three of whom died in childhood. The daughter, Belle, became the wife of Ed Jones of this city, both of whom are deceased during the past three years. W. I. Nelson of Cherokee is the only surviving son. There are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Nelson's second marriage was to Etta A. Gilbert, on June 5, 1912, who survives to mourn the loss of one whose companionship had been exceptionally congenial.

The deceased moved from Massachusetts to Linn county, Iowa when he was 14 years old. As he came to manhood he began farming as a career. At the age of -28. he moved to Cherokee county,, and continued his career as a farmer until the years 1886 when he engaged in the musical business, in which he continued until his retirement from business in the year 1912.

Having come to Iowa early in life, and to Cherokee county more than a half century ago, Mr. Nelson learned the hardships of pioneer life in Iowa and made his contribution to the development of Iowa.

E. W. Nelson was a man of christian faith, having had membership first in the Methodist and later the Congregational churches. He was an honored and faithful member of the Knights of the, Ku Klux Klan, the Masonic and Eastern Star fraternities. He had been a -member of the Masonic lodge for 50 years. He had an exceptional interest in the welfare of his country, having volunteered for service in the Civil war but rejected because of his small physique. His faith in and his fidelity to his country was above the average of men. As a business man Emmerson Nelson had a name that was above reproach. He admired honesty and integrity and was a living example, of these virtues. He was clean of life and thought and personal appearance. He will be remembered by those who knew him as every whit a gentleman. In coming to old aye he had grown old graciously. He will be greatly missed by those, with whom he mingled socially. By those who knew him as a friend he will be remembered as a friend indeed.

Rev. B H. Coonradt will officiate at the funeral service tomorrow. Thursday at 3:30 p. m.. and the Masonic fraternity and interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery where his parents are buried.
