Joseph Allers
Joseph H. Allers, 61, 4420 Highway 35, a barber at Odell for many years, died April 26 at Hood River Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 7, 1923, at Anamoose, N.D., to Theodore and Anna Allers and was reared in North Dakota. He served in the Army during World War II. He and Lois Walker were married April 22, 1950, at Spokane, Wash. They moved to Hood River in 1952 to complete construction on The Dalles dam.
He attended barber college in Portland in the late 1950s and worked in an Odell barber shop for many years before starting his own business, Joe's Barber Shop. He has worked as custodian at Mid Valley Elementary School in recent yearss, and retired in December, 1984.
He was past president of Odell Lions, and was a member of the Hood River Elks, the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include: his wife Lois of Hood River; daughters Geraldine Hutson and Christy Weseman of Hood River and Eleen Johnson of Arizona; a son, Don Walker of Hood River; sisters Alice Hutchinson and Toni Irwin of Montana, Kay Brown of Washington and Sylvia Calkins of North Dakota; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was held Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Monsignor Matthew Crotty officiating. A private family committal was held.
The family suggests that those who wish to contribute in his memory give to FISH or Catholic Relief Services, in care of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
