Mrs. Hodges

The Hamilton Herald-News October 20, 2005

Lorine Hodges died Oct. 11, 2005, at Hamilton General Hospital.

She was born May 20, 1921, in Hamilton County, the child of William Abner Hodges and Mae Bell Petett Hodges.

She graduated from Hamilton High School and attended business college in Dallas. She went on to work in the accounting office of a magazine company in New York City, NY. She had a great love of music and taught herself to play the piano and the guitar. She also taught her nephew, Jimmy Hodges to play the guitar.

She met Homer Cooper, while visiting her sister Willie Lampley, in Los Angeles, CA. They were married April 20, 1945, in De Queen, AR. in his Mother's house. Their first five years were spent in Long Island, NJ. where Mr. Cooper was stationed in the Navy. They had a short time living in the Philippines as WWII was winding down.

Ms. Hodges had what she called a thirst for knowledge. She sought out education, not waiting for it to find her. She read extensively and one of her dreams was to see her daughters graduate college. She accompanied 12 other Navy wives, on a destroyer ship, through a typhoon, in order to get to the Philippines. She spoke many times of trying to cook Thanksgiving dinner on a hotplate while wearing shorts and sleeveless top. When Mr. Cooper was discharged from the Navy, they and their new baby girl, moved to Tulsa, Okla. Mr. Cooper became a life long truck driver. Except for a couple of short stints of living in Houston, Mrs. Hodges lived in Tulsa, OK. until 1980, when she moved back to Hamilton to live with her sisters, and stayed.

She was preceded in death by her one brother, James Abner Hodges, two sisters, Willie Mae Hodges Lampley and Bobbi Hodges McBee and three half-sisters, Eva Hodges Barnett, Laura Hodges Harris and Bernice 'Benny' Hodges Walker.

Survivors include two daughters, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Phyllis Jean Cooper Hund and her husband Chriss, their daughters, Kimberly Hund, Samantha Hund and her two children, Bryce Allen Hund and Kyra Paige Hund. Her daughter, Joyce Ann Cooper Henderson and her son Roger Lee Henderson. Ms. Hodges' body was cremated.
