James Whitehead Hendon served in CO I, 3RD Regiment, "CLARKE COUNTY RIFLES", during the Civil War. He was promoted to 1ST Lt. on 20 Aug 1861. He was elected Captain on 30 Sep 1861. Retired April 28, 1862; "Hendon, James W. -- 1st Lieutenant - September 1863. Captured at Decatur, Alabama, October 28, 1864, and sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio. Released June 16, 1865."

"Lucky" died in 1875 and James married second, Elizabeth A. (Jackson) Whitlow, in Lee County, Alabama on 19 Apr 1877.
