In 1862 (Civil War) he enlisted as a private with two brothers in Washington Co., N.Y., in the 123rd Regiment, NYS Volunteer Infantry. On the eve of his departure with his regiment, he married neighbor Jane Reid and Jane's brother married his sister. The family later became pioneers in Iowa.
