AUNT OF GOVERNOR

Was Mrs. Mary Arne Wallis, Who Died This Morning.

IN POOR HEALTH FIVE YEARS

But in Her Earlier Life Was Prominent in Many Activities - Funeral Friday.

Mrs. Mary Arne Hewson, widow of David B. Wallis, an aunt of Governor Charles S. Whitman and a prominent resident of this city, died early this morning at the home of her son-in-law, Rev. Dr. A. S. Hoyt, No. 15 Seminary Street. Although she had been in ill health for the past five years her condition did not become serious until last September, and since that time has gradually failed. She was 88 years of age. Mrs. Wallis was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David B. Arne, her father being one of the pioneer physicians in this section. The mother of Mrs. Wallis was a daughter of the late Squire Munro of Elbridge, and she possessed a strong trace of the gentler qualities and sterling virtues of that family. She appeared to have inherited a strong, impetuous nature, fine ability, together with unusual beauty, vivacity and courage from her father. In her youth and middle life, Mrs. Wallis was a strikingly handsome woman.
She was very friendly and hospitable and lived and sympathized with all of the children of her circle of acquaintance, and always endeavored to make them happy. As a charter member of the Central Presbyterian Church, she took an active interest in the work of that church up to the time that her health prevented. She was also prominent in philanthropic and social affairs, having worked in the interest of the Cayuga Home for Children and the Home in Grant Avenue for many years.
Mrs. Wallis was married twice, first being united to George D. Hewson, who at that time was the cashier of the Cayuga County National Bank. With Mr. Hewson she took up her residence in Genesee Street, in the home now occupied by Willard E. Case. He died many years ago. Later she married David B. Wallis who was also an employe of the same bank as her first husband. He, too, died quite a number of years ago.
Her youngest brother's drowning years ago caused her bitter grief and this was followed by the death of her only son George at the age of 13. Later she was destined to have more sorrow, when her beloved grandson and her only daughter, the latter the late Mrs. A. S. Hoyt, died nine years ago. The death of her daughter was perhaps the real beginning of her illness for she seemed to show signs of a broken heart with all of these deaths coming at intervals.
On every visit to this section, Governor Whitman would visit Mrs. Wallis, who was a favorite of the chief executive of the state, his own father and mother, being dead. He last visited Mrs. Wallis last Fall, when inspecting Auburn Prison. It is probable that unless there is some urgent state business the governor will attend the funeral.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Dewitt Benham of Baltimore, and a number of nieces and nephews in addition to Governor Whitman. Among these are Dr. Dewitt Benham of Baltimore and John H. Hewson of Washington, D. C., who visited his aunt each Summer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at the house at 4 o'clock. Rev. F. W. Palmer, D. D., the pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be made in Fort Hill.
