Hopson was a Captain during the Revolutionary War enlisting in the Continental Army in Salisbury, Connecticut. After the Revolutionary War, he was one of the early settlers of Athens county, arriving in 1803 and settling in Rome Township. The area was later named Beebe Station after the railroad was built. He resided at Beebe Station until his death in 1834.

His first wife was Deliverance Curtis who he married in Athens County on 9/4/1774. They had 8 children:
Polly, Ethan, Charles A., James, Betsey, Peter, Hannah and William.

His second wife was Rebecca Howe who he married in Athens County on 4/3/1826.

His parents were Peter Beebe Sr. and Priscilla Ledyard.
