John A. Brown, Whitlash Pioneer, Called By Death

John A. Brown, pioneer stockman and prominent citizen of the Sweet Grass Hills, died at the home of his son, Elmer Brown, near Whitlash Monday morning of a heart attack at the age of seventy-nine years.

Deceased had been in his usual health recently and Monday morning helped with the chores and seemed quite happy and cheerful. He was stricken with a heart attack shortly after breakfast, and passed away without suffering any apparent pain.

Among the survivors are the son, Elmer of Whitlash; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Demarest of Whitlash. Other surviving family members are a son, Harold Brown of Seattle; a daughter, Mrs. Esther Kincaid of Bellingham, Wash. Another daughter, Bessie, passed away about 15 years ago.

Mr. Brown first came to the state in 1890, stopping for two years in Great Falls, and then coming to the Sweet Grass Hill country where he located permanently. He had lived in the Hills community continuously since 1892, except for a few years he spent in Seattle.

Mr. Brown was married to Mary Jane Marshall in Ontario, Canada, on Dec. 23, 1886. Mrs. Brown passed away 16 years ago.

The deceased was a highly respected citizen of the community in which he lived and for many years was one of the leading stockmen of this part of the state. In his later years he was always active, cheerful, and companionable, and had a wide circle of friends among the old timers and neighbors.

Funeral services were held in Whitlash community hall. Following the funeral services the body was taken from there to Seattle for burial beside the bodies of his wife and daughter. The son, Mr. Elmer Brown, accompanied the body to Seattle.
