Clara Mae Spedden

TODD'S POINT - Clara Mae Spedden, 88, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. Mrs. Spedden had been in failing health for the past month, and had been a patient at the Memorial Hospital at Easton since Aug. 3.

She was born on Oct. 9, 1915 at Mt. Holly, a daughter of the late Leland C. and Alice LeCompte Beckwith.

She was born and raised at Mt. Holly and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1932. She was married to Sewell Lee Spedden Sr. on May 16, 1934.

After her marriage she lived in the Neck District where she helped her husband on their farm in Cook's Point while raising their six children. Mr. Spedden passed away on Feb. 12, 1988. Since her husband passed away she had made her home at Todd's Point.

Mrs. Spedden was an avid gardener and had many flowers which grew in her yard and she always had a huge vegetable garden that she shared with family and friends. Mrs. Spedden was an active member of Beckwith United Methodist Church for her entire married life. She had also participated in the Spedden's United Methodist Church True Blue Class.

She is survived by four daughters Patricia Tolley and her husband, Robert Tolley, Barbara Wilson and her husband, Theodore Wilson, Betty Smith and her husband, William Smith and Eleanor Wheatley and her husband, Arthur Wheatley Jr. all of Cambridge; two sons, Sewell L. Spedden Jr., Philip Spedden Sr. and his wife, Charlotte Todd Spedden all of Cambridge. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Aaron and Rachel Mayne, both of Cambridge; one brother, Leland C. Beckwith Jr. of East New Market and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Don Schell officiating. Burial followed at Spedden Seward Cemetery. The family receives friends during the hour preceding the service.

Pallbearers were Eric Tolley, Gary Smith, Steve Spedden, Philip Spedden Jr., Jeff Ruark and Christopher Collison Jr.
