Heart Attack Is Fatal to R. T. Andress – Rites Are Monday For Well Known Business Leader
Redden Thaddeus Andress, 59, prominent leader of Shreveport civic, charitable and business activities for the past 25 years, died in a local hospital at 1:45 p.m. yesterday of a heart attack suffered in his office.
The owner of Andress Motor Co. here and director of Lee National Life Insurance Co. and Louisiana Bank and Trust Co., he was stricken at about 10:30 a.m.
Until recent years he had been president of several other North Louisiana businesses. They included Andress-Hanna Inc. here, Andress Motor Co. and Andress Tractor and Implement Co. in Minden; and Andress-Abbott Inc., Alexandria.
At the time of his death, Mr. Andress was a director of the United Fund, the Community Chest of Caddo and Bossier Parishes, the Shreveport Civic Opera Assn., the Public Appeals Board and the Louisiana State Fair Association of which he was past president.
He was a member and chairman of the board of directors of the First Baptist Church and an executive committee member of the Public Affairs Research Council and the Junior League Horse Show.
Mr. Andress was also a past president of the Shreveport Lions Club, Norwela Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Shreveport Automobile Dealers Assn.
A veteran of both World Wars, he served as an Army sergeant in France during World War I and as a Naval Reserve lieutenant commander during World War II.
Born in Beatrice, Ala., and educated at Marion Military Academy and at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he came to Louisiana and opened a Ford dealership in Cotton Valley in 1926. His interests extended to a dealership in Minden in 1929 and on July 10, 1931, he opened Andress Motor Co., in Shreveport.
Seven years later, he organized Andress-Abbott Motor Co., in Alexandria and in 1947, started the Andress-Hanna Lincoln-Mercury dealership here.
Recently, he had disposed of all the companies except Andress Motor Co. here.
A 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner, Mr. Andress was a member of El Karubah Temple and the Royal Order of Jesters, Lowe-McFarlane American Legion Post, Shreveport Country Club, Shreveport Club and Petroleum [Club].
He is survived by his widow, the former Helen Wells of New Orleans, with whom he lived at 424 Sherwood Rd.; two brothers, Farrell Andress, Tampa, Fla., and H. C. Andress, Minden, and four sisters, Mrs. W. M. Florey, Monroesville, Ala.; Mrs. J. H. McMurphy, Beatrice, Ala.; Mrs. T. J. Reding, Loxley, Ala., and Miss Sarah Andress, Pensacola, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at Osborn Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow with Dr. James W. Middleton, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dr. J. E. Knighton, James B. Booth, R. Mcl. Jeter, Sam Bailey Hicks, Dr. Ralph Riggs, W. R. Barrow, Glen C. Rives and J. E. Pitcher.
