The Edgartown Inn began in the year 1798 when the present inn was built as a residence by Capt.Thomas Worth at a time when whaling capt.'s from Edgartown sailed around the horn and into the Pacific whaling grounds. A few years later it changed from residence to inn, first as the Gibbs house, later as the Norton House, eventually as the Edgartown Inn. It has hosted such as Daniel Webster,Nathaniel Hawthorne, Senator Charles Summner and John F Kennedy when he was a Senator. [Banks adds "res. Edgartown, master mariner; removed to Hudson, N.Y.
