Mr. Carney Belk Brown, 86, of Route 1, died May 20, 1997, in the Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven.

Mr. Brown was born in Hyde County, June 8, 1910, the son of the late Hezekiah Brown and Etta Warner Brown. He married the former Irene Carawan of July 4, 1930, who survives. Mr. Brown was a commercial fisherman. He was the oldest living member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church, Swan Quarter. He was also a former member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Surviving are his wife, Irene; two daughters, Leona Brown Pugh of Gull Rock and Connie Brown Gibbs of Pinetown; two brothers, Robert Brown of Suffolk, Hezikiah Brown Jr. of Norfolk; a sister, Clendenen Rice of Burlington, N.C.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Calvary Presbyterian Church, Oyster Creek Landing, by the Revs. Lynne Manilla, Phil Emmert and Rafael Farrow Jr. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery, Swan Quarter. The family will receive friends at Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and other times at his home, Route 1, Box 154, Swan Quarter. The body will be taken from the funeral home to Calvary Presbyterian Church to lie in state from 12:30 Friday until the funeral hour.

The following will serve as pallbearers, Wayne Harris, Barry Harris, Joseph Pugh, Clyde Gibbs Jr.., Cory Gibbs, Ken Harris Jr. and Keith Harris.
