Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award on June 22, 2870 for his actions as a sergeant in Company C, 2nd US Cavalry, US Army, at the Little Blue River near Little Blue, Nebraska on June 22, 1870 during the Indian Campaigns. On that day, he and four other soldiers were looking for stray horses when they were ambushed by a large party of Indians. They managed to repel the attack, killing three and wounding seven others and then he escorted three civilians to the nearest settlement. The other four soldiers were also awarded the Medal of Honor. He died at the age of 51. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in Action."
