James Peter Waldschmidt was born April 11, 1927, in Streeter, Ill., the son of Leo and Matilda (Elbert) Waldschmidt. He attended Burnside Consolidated Schools in Burnside, Iowa, and graduated from Burnside High School. Following the completion of his education, Jim enlisted with the United States Navy. After receiving his honorable discharge, James returned to Iowa where he married Patricia Borer on November 12, 1947, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

James and his family moved to Armstrong, Iowa, where he managed the Farmers COOP in Armstrong and farmed for many years. In his later years, Jim drove truck for Arts Way and Hancor. His true passion in life was farming. Not only did Jim farm for himself, he also did custom work for other farmers in the area. Following his "retirement," Jim helped on the Mervin Johnson farm. When not working in the field, Jim was watching the markets and after moving to Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong, he would frequently ask his family how the grain markets were doing. Jim was a very active man who was not one to sit and watch time slip by. He loved playing cards and gambling. In his younger years, Jim found joy in restoring old cars. He loved the outdoors and all it had to offer, even in the winter months when you could find Jim pulling his children on sleds behind the tractor or off on one of his many snowmobile adventures. In the summer months, Jim looked forward to camping at Dawson's, something he did seasonally for 25 years. He also enjoyed all the trips to Okoboji and all of the lazy days spent in the air flying the plane he was partnered in.

On December 29, 1981, James was united in marriage to Lenor Colby. Together the couple made their home on the farm on the Iowa side of the state line. In 1999, the couple moved into Armstrong. Jim was a life member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 in Fairmont and was also a past member of the Armstrong Fire Department. Jim cherished the opportunity to spend time with his family and friends. His zest for life and adventure will be greatly missed by those that loved him and called him friend.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lenor Waldschmidt of Armstrong, Iowa; children, Jennifer (Matt) Gullett of Ankeny, Iowa, Dennis (Lori) Waldschmidt of Mason City, Iowa, Deb (Al) Brown of Armstrong, Iowa, Jack (Ginger) Waldschmidt of Nevada, Iowa, Kathy Rezac of Armstrong, Iowa, Joyce (Duyane) VonBank of Armstrong, Iowa, Sharon (Jim) Turano of Rocks Springs, Wy.; 15 grandchildren, Victoria (Corey) Carr, Rick (Krista) VonBank, Jack (Jennifer) VonBank, Preston Waldschmidt, Morgan Waldschmidt, Jim (Amanda) Rezac, Jeff (Fawn) Rezac, Amy (Mike) Chihak, Julie (Bryon) Peterson, A.J.
