George "Corky" Stoddard was the son of Dewitt Talmadge Stoddard and Lillian Ellen England. His Mother Lillian died while on a vacation car trip when George was only 3 years old. He grew up with his father and his second wife for a few years and was then sent to live with his Grandfather George M. Stoddard.

George entered the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and served aboard the USS Houston until her sinking in the Sundra Straits on 3/1/1942. George survived 40 months of captivity and torture at the hands of the Japanese. At the end of the war he testified in the war tribunal trials as a victim of waterboarding and other torture tactics. After the war George married Irene L. Creel and had two children - Marilyn Kay Stoddard (Messier) and George Daniel Stoddard.
