Enlisted as a Private on August 1, 1861 at the age of 19. Joined the 2nd Iowa Light Artillery Regiment on August 31, 1861.

Promoted to 5th Corporal on November 1, 1862.

Died of disease on November 21, 1863 at Vicksburg, MS.
