James Walter "Pete" Cornelius, 84, of Baker City, died Jan. 28, 2011, at his home.

His memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the New Beginning Pentecostal Church of God in Baker City. Pastor Everett Pierce will officiate.

Pete was born on Aug. 31, 1926, at Battlefield, Ark., to Walter Lee and Viola Pearl Cornelius. He joined the U.S. Army, serving for 8 years. Among other jobs, he worked for 11 years at Lindsay Olive at Lindsay, Calif., as a forklift operator.

He was a minister for the majority of his life. He was a youth leader at the Gospel Defenders in Madra, Calif., and then served as pastor at the Revival Center in Porterville, Calif., from 1985 to 1988. He served as pastor of the Pentecostal Church of God at La Grande from 1998 to 2002 and then retired from the Pentecostal Church of God in 2008.

Pete enjoyed traveling, fishing, sightseeing, visiting friends and family, amusement parks, zoos, singing and playing his guitar, going to church, revivals, and watching old westerns.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Pearl Cornelius his wife of 44 years, Virginia June Cornelius; family members Ruby Cornelius, Roy Cornelius, and Raymond Cornelius, Christine Dye and Gladys Buttram; two daughters, Charlene and DeAnna Pipkin; and son, Jay.

Survivors include his family members,sister Lucille Hubbard of Porterville California, children Donald Lee Jackson and his wife Kelby, Judith LaNell Scott and her husband Jim, Virginia Louise Vaughn and her husband Roy and James Walter Miles Cornelius and his wife Tammy; several nepews, nieces, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren.
