Eleanor K. Vucich (nee Knerr) 92, passed away Monday, February 18, 2008 at the Banner Gardens Hospice House in Mesa Arizona. Born September 15, 1915 in Pittsburgh PA, her family moved to the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago Indiana in 1919, where her father helped set up the railroad spike-making facility for Inland Steel. She attended Saint Patrick Parish grade school and East Chicago Washington High School with the class of 1934. Eleanor married Joseph R. Vucich in 1935 at the Holy Trinity Croatian Church and they retired to Mesa Arizona's Sunland Village in March of 1980. Joseph had worked for Sinclair Oil and in a supervisory capacity for Atlantic Richfield in East Chicago. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He passed away in December 1995. She remained in her Mesa home until Sunday, February 10th, when she was taken to Banner Gateway Medical Center and then on February 12th to the Hospice House where she died in her sleep from the recent strokes that were too much for her still strong constitution.
Eleanor is survived by her son, David of Highland IN and her grandson, David of Cupertino CA. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Kathryn Seamon of Modesto CA and Barbara Hmurovich of Whiting IN, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Kate Evans, Loretta Fralish, and Marie Holt, and five brothers: Joseph, George, Charles, Frank, and Robert Knerr.
Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2008 at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens Chapel, 7900 E. Main St., Mesa AZ 85207. Father Domenico C. Pinti, Pastor of the Saint George Roman Catholic Parish in Apache Junction AZ, will lead a Rosary at 1:30 pm. The graveside service will follow.
