Donald Henry Suess, 83, of Silver Bay, died Sept. 23, 2006 at the Lake View Home, Two Harbors. He was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Minneapolis to Henry Benjamin Suess and Alma Mildred Jesse, where he grew up and graduated from Boys' Vocational High School in 1939. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and saw action in both the European and Pacific Theaters and served on the Minneapolis Police Department for four years after the war. In 1951, Don brought his family to the North Shore where he helped build Reserve Mining and served as a Lake County Deputy Sheriff for two years. He organized Silver Bay's first police department and served as its Chief for 30 years. During his career he was active in state and national law enforcement organizations and was President of Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association in 1973. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Masonic Lodge. During retirement Don and Audrey enjoyed their winters in Texas and their summers in Silver Bay. Don enjoyed travel, antiques, music and playing cribbage. His hobbies included lapidary, photography, archery, bowling, hunting and fishing. He was a dedicated policeman, loyal friend, beloved brother and a devoted husband and father. Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Audrey Lorrayne Matson; and son, Terry Wayne. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Todd Donald and Tammie Suess of Port St. Lucie, Fla., daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Marvin Crawford of Omaha, Neb., daughter-in-law, Darlene Suess of Pittsburgh, Penn.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Delorus and Ray Johnson of Minneapolis and Marian and Robert Haglund of Canoga Park, Calif.; nieces, Lynn Palmi, Barbara McCalley and Laurie Johnson; nephews, Steve Haglund, Richard Johnson, Robert Johnson, Randy Johnson, David Johnson and many longtime friends and neighbors. PRIVATE SERVICES AND INTERMENT:at Riverside Cemetery, Kerrick, Minn. Memorials preferred to the Silver Bay Police Department, City Hall, 7 Davis Dr., Silver Bay, MN 55614 for the purchase of much needed police equipment.
